Summary: The oirgin of the Indian National Congress is little known. It was nearly 150 years ago that the first Indian organisation, with a political purpose, was founded in India, and before the Congress was started in 1885, the Indian people had fifty years' experience behind them. The present book is a continuous history of the Congress interpreting the events in political terms. In it the authors have succeeded to evolve a paradigm of nationalist history of India, which has remained until today somewhat basic to the study of Indian history of 19th century upto the twenties of the twentieth. The object behind this book has been to write a history first of the Congress as a movement, then as a party and that too within the framework of India of the 19th century in order to discover and trace various social as well as economic forces which had prepare .. J eventually the way to the formation of the Congress and the expansion of its organisational activities. Here is a study of the various stages of the Congress movement upto the period when under the leadership of Gandhi the Congress adopted the policy of non-cooperation. In fact it is a survey of nationalism in India, covering about 100 years, emphasising its remarkable continuity and potentiality.
