The origin of the Indian National Congress is little known. It was nearly 150 years ago that the first Indian organisation with a political purpose was founded in India, and before the Congress was started in 1885, the Indian people had fifty years' experience behind them. The present book is a continuous history of the Congress interpreting the events in political terms. The object
behind the book has been to write a history of the Congress as a movement and as a party which under the leadership of Gandhi attained complete independence. The evolution of the Congress under Gandhi into a platform for mass struggle was nothing to be wondered at, for this transformation was inherent in the first resolution ever passed by the Congress in Bombay. The culmination
of the Congress objectives was reached when in 1942 it passed the 'Quit India' resolution, the idea of which was always incipient in all that Congress did or said before. The period stretching from 1832 to 1947 is one of the most resplendent periods of Indian history. This time will shine forth as something even more impressive than the classical period, for never have the Indian people in their long march to destiny, done so much, all of them together, for transforming a civilization into a nation, and a nation into a nation-state, in order to become equal in status and importance to the greatest of nations of this earth.
