Summary: The specific purpose of this volume is to present a set of scholarly, probing essays that will serve as a useful supplement to standard textbooks in courses on international relations and world politics. Since only a frac tion of the large body of relevant literature can be reproduced in a col lection of this type, we urge the student to explore his specific interests by reading some of the books and periodical literature noted at the end of each part of this text. Although the readings are hardly exhaustive, we have deliberately included selections that will sharpen the reader's curi osity, interest, and understanding in the field of international politics. The readings are divided into six parts: 1) Perspectives in the Study of International Politics; 2) Determinants of Power; 3) Conflict and Co existence; 4) Social Psychological Aspects of International Behavior; 5) The United States in the World Arena; and 6) World Order: Problems and Prospects of Transformation. Each part opens with a brief introduc tion that supplies the political and analytical context for the readings, and identifies their salient aspects. The selected bibliography and the study questions which conclude each part are intended to provoke fur ther reading, class questions, and lively discussion. Forging a book of this kind while immersed in the vast sea of litera ture on international politics led to difficult and sometimes painful deci sions by the editors. Opinions may differ about the relevance and utility of the selections included, but this is to be expected. The range and quality of available literature did not allow us to make simple decisions about inclusion. We are hopeful that what we have assembled in this volume will meet the needs of both students and instructors, contributing to thought and inquiry in a crucial area of human affairs. The editors express their sincere appreciation to these authors and publishers who were kind enough to grant permission for reproduction of their materials. We are also grateful to the Western Kentucky Uni versity for making its various facilities available in the preparation of the manuscript.
