The new political entity of pressure groups assumed greater
importance in the changing political system of India. They are
on the road of modernization of political process, particularly in
the seventies when the Central and State Governmental system
become a hot bed of pressure politics. A number of comonflaged
anomic groups have come up on the political scene un noticed and
uncared for
Several theorists, mainly American scholars, propounded func-
tional theories and gave a new vocabulary of the Behavioural
Science to analyse the political infrastructures with a developmental
approach. No Indian author had so far laid his hand on the
study of pressure politics very much in vogue in the political pro-
cess of India and the States. As such this happens to be the first
work of its kind which took complete five years in the collection of
material and preparation this volume.
India being quasi-federal with a strong Centre, the pressure
groups are linked from Centre to States. The parties and the deci-
sion - making institutions aggregate the interest of the articulating
structures from States to Centre and also contribute to the process
of feed-back. As such taking Madhya Pradesh into account the
wholesome impact of pressure politics in India has been analysed
in the background of the internationally accepted conceptual
scheme. Besides the origin and growth of the concept of pressure
groups, political culture of India has also been discussed. As
without these backgrounds the founctional performance and inner
dynamics of pressure politics cannot be appreciated. Important
issue areas and popular political episodes have been selected as
examples to substantiate the theoretical conepts. Brief case-studies
based on the published news and interviews have been used as
illustrations.
