Summary: With the exception of the major part of the chapter on the Languages of India which follows Sir George Grierson's chapter in the Gazetteer of India, the extracts herein set forth are taken from Census Reports, for the most part from those relating to the Provinces of British India and the general Reports on India. A Census is a great occasion and it is only by the "good sense, good citizenship and general co-operation of the people of India themselves" (India. 1931 I. i. p. ix.) that it can be carried through to a final and satisfactory conclusion.
