Study of demography is increasingly becoming more and more important. It is primarily because population explosion all over the world has taxed the administrators, planners and economists. It has strained our sociologists, economists and politicians on the one hand and social, economic and political institutions on the other.
Realizing the importance of the subject, I have attempted this volume. It is broadly divided into three parts. Part I deals with basic principles of demography. In this part such important aspects of demography as mortality, fertility, birth rate, death rate, census etc, etc. have been discussed. Part II of the volume is devoted to study of population problems of some selected countries of the world, including U.S.A., U.K., U.S.S.R., Sri Lanka, Japan and China. India's Population problems have been discussed part III of the volume. In this part a beginning has been made in the history of demography in India and discussions have been closed with the Census in India'. In between such current problems as birth rate, mortality in India, migration in India, and India's popu lation policy have been discussed.
In order to support the arguments advanced and viewpoint put forth, authorities both Indian and Foreign have been quoted. The language of book has been deliberately kept simple, so as to avoid strains on the readers put on account of language jargons and technical terms.
