Summary: Removal of poverty is one of the declared objectives of plan ning in India. While the basic assumption of the planning in the past has been that increased economic growth would largely take care of the needs of the poor, certain measures meant directly to improve their lot have also been attempted. One of the experiments is the help attempted to be rendered through the public sector banks. This essay is a preliminary study of some of the measures taken by the public sector banks to help the weaker sections in the rural areas.
