Material type: TextTextPublication details: London; George Allen and Unwin; 1962Subject(s): DDC classification:

Summary: This Directory has been produced in answer to requests particularly from those who work in developing coun tries for information on the organisations in Britain which provide some kind of facility for development activities. It is the first work of its kind in Britain and it covers extremely wide and varied field. an The difficulty has been to keep the entries down to a manageable and useful size. For this reason only those activities are listed which are particularly relevant to developing countries, even though they may not be the only or main activities of the organisation. We have also excluded several categories of organisa tion-in particular: Educational Establishments-where the information can best be obtained from the British Council, 65 Davies Street, London W1 (see 21), or from printed sources such as the Commonwealth Universities Year Book. Commercial Concerns where the number and variety of facilities offered, particularly in the fields of research and training, are too numerous to be listed in a publica tion such as this. Information on commercial firms can often be obtained from the relevant Institution or Associ ation (e.g. the Association of Agricultural Engineers (see 6) can supply information on manufacturers of agricul tural equipment) or from the Federation of British Industries (see 68). Altogether over 500 organisations have been examined -some of them were omitted at their own request. Each entry has been cleared by the organisation to which it refers. Even with these limitations it has proved difficult to decide what to put in and what to leave out. In a first edition there are doubtless many mistakes and omissions. These will be most easily remedied if those who notice them will write to the Overseas Development Institute. Suggestions and comments on the usefulness of the Dir ectory will also be welcome.
