This book is the product of a study of demographic prospects and their implications for economic development in low-income countries. The Office of Population Research at Princeton University has conducted this study for the past three years with substantial support in financial and other forms from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The Bank, in addition a subvention, which by covering extra costs made it financially possible for the Office to carry out the project, has given the authors the invaluable aid of access to its specialists, unclassified materials and research facilities. The Population Council made a grant to the Office of Population Research to defray part of the cost of the authors' visit to India. Neither the Bank nor the Population Council is in any way responsible for the contents of this book; responsibility rests solely with the authors.
The work of the authors has been so fully collaborative that any attempt to decide who was the source of each part of the analysis would be impossible. The study has at all stages developed through conferences, discussions, and arguing-out of disagreements. Much of the material has been proposed by one, written by the other, and revised by both. To the degree that there has been a division of labor within the mutual effort, Hoover has concentrated more on the economic background sections and Coale on the demographic background.
