For the first time a full-fledged objective history of the Indian National Congress during the first thirty-three years of its existence is written on the basis of a comparative study of its annual. reports, memoirs, contemporary anti-Congress propaganda literature, journals and newspapers and unpublished diaries. A~ attempt has been made to find the relationship between the social, economic and educ-t-vial background of more than five hundred leading Congressmen of the period with the ideals set before the organisation. The alphabetical list of names of 781 persons who delivered speeches in the Congress up to 1917 along with the dates and subjects of their speeches supplemented by the classified account of original resolutions alphabetically arranged will prove to be a storehouse of information to intelligent readers and diligent investigators in social sciences
