United States and Asia

By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: London; Atlantic Press; 1956Description: 370 pDDC classification:
  • 327.73 BAT
Summary: The aim of this volume is to provide a general briefing on the de velopment of American relations with the lands of Asia and the Pacific. As such it is intended primarily for the general reader and the student seeking an introductory approach to the subject. It purports to be frank and objective within a framework of liberal and Christian princi ples and to come to grips honestly with problems currently confronting the United States in Asia. Major and general developments are stressed and details are included only to the extent necessary to clarify the narrative. Since the lands of the Near East are linked historically and otherwise to the Mediterranean area, they are not included in the Asia encompassed by this study. The book is based on a critical examination of primary materials as well as a careful study of the works of a large number of specialists. An attempt has been made to follow a "unit" approach. As a con sequence there may be some minor overlapping of material. The source references are primarily intended to be grateful acknowledgments for the research and judgments of others. To avoid needless repetition, "Secretary" before a personal name indicates a United States Secretary of State, unless the text specifies or implies otherwise. The spellings of Asiatic names are admittedly inconsistent since the intent has been to employ the particular spellings that may be most familiato the general reader.
