Summary, etc. | This book is about the income of the community and the manner in which that income is used to create economic welfare. The relation ship between income and economic welfare is not a simple one. Here, the relationship is pursued through four sections which deal in turn with the meanings of income and economic welfare, the way in which income and economic welfare are created, the factors influencing the. distribution of the income created through the productive process and, finally, the way in which the State has stepped in to alter the initial distribution of income and, hence, of economic welfare.

As it is treated here, the relation between income and economic welfare is an important part of the broader study of Social Econo mics. It is only a part of the broader study because, for example, the causes of the social changes, the economic impacts of which are studied, are not considered. This omission is deliberate as the book has been written primarily for university students reading economics for one year as part of a social studies degree or diploma, who will have a knowledge of social changes from their other studies.

Although designed primarily for a particular group of students, it is hoped that the book may be of use to other students and to the general reader who takes an interest in the economic basis of society and realises the importance of that basis for understanding current problems. No acquaintance with economic theory is presumed and economic jargon is avoided wherever possible; if unavoidable, the terms are defined. |
