In the process such concepts as optimality in resource allocation, externalities, feasibility, welfare criteria, social welfare function, price and investment criteria for public enterprise, and gains from trade are both explained and critically evaluated. It is argued that welfare <br/>economics has to include ethical considerations, and that if the subject is properly visualised, it covers the analysis of any problem of applied economics.
