| Summary, etc. | THE PAPERS presented in this volume* were written for an international seminar on "The New Metropolis in the Arab <br/>World," sponsored by the Egyptian Society of Engineers and the Congress for Cultural Freedom and held in Cairo, 17-22 December 1960. The purpose of the Seminar (whose officers and members are listed in Appendix B at the end of this volume) was to examine the recent growth of cities in the Arab world, the problems they raise, proposed solutions, and the quality of urban life in general in that area. Under the . impact of nationalism, industrialization, Western influences, and the effort to reshape their own <br/>institutions, Arab countries have recently created such new cities as Amman and expanded such ancient and medieval ones as Damascus and Cairo. As the Middle East emerged into independence, it began to face problems of city planning as well as of national planning. |
