Summary, etc. In the modern era of economic planning it is not possible to overemphasise the need and utility of having comprehensive and dependable economie statistics. There can be limle doubt that's nation which studies the course of events as it is revealed by statistical analysis is infinitely better equipped to take advantage of opportunities Than another which mainly relies on methods of empiricem. It has very correctly been said that statistics are not merely a record of what has been, but are for use in planning what shall be. Statistical orga nisations today assist directly in the day-to-day problems of administration as well as provide their theoretical background, and the efficiency of administration depends to a considerable degree on the extent to which statistical organisation has been increased as a guide to national policy.

In our country the importance of having a sound statistical sys tem and dependable statistics was realised rather late. In fact it was only after the Independence of the country that some tangible steps were taken in this direction. During the last 15 years our economic statistics have considerably developed both quantitatively as well as qualitatively. However, despite this coverage and quality of our economic spid development both the statistics are still unsatisfactory. Fortunately, our Government is conscious of this fact and efforts are being made to bring about improvements.

The present work deals with the economic statistics of India with special reference to the developments after the Independence of the country. An attempt has been made to discuss the concepts, tech nique and methodology of collection of important economic statistics both by the central as well as the state governments. The weaknesses of the existing system have been pointed out and suggestions for improvement have been given at relevant places.
