Summary, etc. On September 12th-17th, 1955, Cultural Freedom convened a meeting in Milan, the Congress for the theme of which was: "The Future of Freedom'. This meeting, held in the city's Museum of Science and Technology, was attended by more than 150 men and women, from all parts of the free world, and representing all schools of thought in the fields of economics, history, sociology, and philosophy. Their purpose was that of re-examining the great doctrinal conflicts of modern society, in the light of contemporary experience. As the preparatory memorandum observed:<br/><br/>In large areas of the world today new and unimagined forms of human enslavement have emerged. What remains of the venerable and simple antitheses "capitalism vs. economic planning," "the individual vs. the state," "left vs. right," "freedom vs. authority"?... Beneath the surface of everyday political discussion and controversy, there are already signs of a tendency to rethink our con ventional political ideas in the light of history."<br/><br/>This book contains a selection from the papers and discussion that concerned themselves with the theme of the Soviet Economic System, in its rela tion to the future of freedom. It is the first of a series that will include such titles as "Tradition, Authority, and Freedom,' 'What Road for the Underdeveloped Countries?', and other subjects that claimed the attention of the Milan Conference.
