520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The book Indian Economy Since Independence was primarily de signed to meet the requirements of the syllabus for B.A. (Hons.) students of economics of the University of Delhi. The recommended readings being scattered in various journals, official documents and books, were not easily accessible to students as well as teachers. It was, therefore, strongly felt by many of my teaching colleagues that somebody should compile the essential readings in a book which could be easily available to students and teachers. My work on the edited volume Indian Economy Since Independence is, therefore, an humble attempt towards this end.

The publication of the first edition was welcomed by students and teachers alike and encouraging words from my colleagues and senior economists have been a great source of inspiration for me to revise the book every year (now 14th edition), taking into account the requirements of new readings recommended and the new economic literature on various issues facing the Indian Economy as well as the latest policy measures of the Government of India.

The book, which was originally designed for the students of the University of Delhi, is getting popular in other Universities as well and Prof. V.K.R.V. Rao's comments on the book have thus proved correct: "...It will be a most unusual kind of text-book for pioneer ing which you deserve congratulations. I, therefore, send you my good wishes for the success of the publication and its use by students who do Economics Honours not only in the University of Delhi but also other Universities."

A text-book on Indian Economy must take cognisance of the latest developments that take place in the economy from time to time., Accordingly, the present edition has been revised, including some of the new readings recommended and the relevant sections from Economic Survey 2001-2002, RBI Report on Currency and Finance 2000-01, the Approach Paper to the Tenth Plan, The Exim Policy 2002-07, Report of the Task Force on Employment Opportunities and report of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council on India's Economic Reforms.

In response to the feed back from students as well as my colleagues teaching this paper, editorial notes for each topic/chap ter have been incorporated to facilitate better understanding. In these notes an attempt has been made to highlight the main points in the articles and to update the data on the basis of the latest reports and other official sources. Many a time, where a single topic has more than one paper/article, an attempt has been made to give an integrated view instead of providing a separate editorial note on each article. Also, when any recommended reading is not available for publication, an attempt has been made to cover the same in the editorial notes particularly for the benefit of the students. The editorial notes have been revised in the light of the new readings and the latest data available.
