Summary, etc. This year marks the Birth Centenary of Sir Chintaman Dwarakanath Deshmukh- the First Indian Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
In recognition of the valuable services rendered by C.D. Deshmukh to the nation and to perpetuate his memory, the Reserve Bank of India instituted in 1984 an annual lecture series styled Chintaman Deshmukh Memorial Lectures as a part of the Bank's Golden Jubilee Celebrations. Nine lectures have been delivered so far (including the one delivered today by Mr. Edward George, Governor, Bank of England) in the series. All these nine lectures are being released in the form of this commemorative volume as a tribute by the Reserve Bank to this great son of India in this year of his Centenary Celebrations.
C.D. Deshmukh had a long association with the Reserve Bank stretching over a period of 17 years from July 1939 when he was first appointed as Liason Officer in the Bank to keep Government of India in touch with the Bank's affairs. He assumed the third Governorship of the Reserve Bank of India on August 11, 1943, succeeding Sir James Taylor. C.D. Deshmukh was Governor from August 11, 1943 to June 30, 1949. His association with the Reserve Bank continued later as the Union Finance Minister. He played an important role in the Bretton Woods Conference in July 1944, leading to the establishment of the International Monetary Fund and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. In both of these Institutions, he was a Member of the Board of Governors for ten years and was the Chairman at their Joint Annual Meetings held in Paris in 1950.
