Summary, etc. | Here is a collection of essays on subjects of enduring interest which have appeared during the past fifteen years and which Professor Robson's colleagues, and former students, have urged him to reprint as a book.

The essays cover a wide field. They include the discussion of fundamental questions of political thought, such as the relation between freedom, equality and socialism; and how far our system of education is adequate as a preparation for democracy. Another group deals with some of the basic issues of practical government, such as the reform of British Government; methods of administering and planning the vast metropolitan cities found all over the world; and the transplanting of political institutions and ideas in the new States of Asia and Africa.

A highly entertaining essay describes the part played by Bernard Shaw in helping the author to found The Political Quarterly and this is enlivened by some brilliant correspondence between G.B.S. and W.A.R. The most imaginative piece is entitled "The Future of Public Administration' in which the author peers far into the future at the instigation of

Bertrand de Jouvenel, the creator of Futuribles. The volume includes also a group of travelogue essays in which the author recorded his penetrating

observations on India, the United States and Russia. All the essays (except the last mentioned) have been revised and in some instances substantially extended. Politics and Government at Home and Abroad can be read with pleasure and profit by civil servants and politicians, by teachers and students of

political science, and by the intelligent general reader The author is Professor Emeritus of Public Administration in the University of London and a former President of the International Political Science Association. |
