Summary, etc. | Over the last few decades, India has made significant strides in a number of sócio-economic fields. The environmental costs of economic progress have been heavy, despite the country's rich tradition of conservation. While the spread of an input intensive Green Revolution has ensured food security, it has been accompanied by the phenomena of depletion and contamination of water bodies, degradation of soils and the hazards associated with the use of toxic chemicals and fertilizers. Industrial growth and urbanization have contributed to deforestation and pollution of water, air and land. The concomitant lifestyle changes are reinforcing these trends. In this context, it has become imperative to develop a model of environmentally sustainable economic development.

A sound data base on various aspects of the environment needs to be built up in order to acquire a proper understanding of the environmental condition and devise appropriate strategies for the protection of the environment. As the nodal agency for the development of the statistical system in India, the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) took the initiative of bringing out a Compendium of Environment Statistics in 1997 to fulfill this need. The present issue is the fifth in the series.

The CSO has been endeavouring to improve the coverage, content and presentation of this publication and make it more users friendly. In the current issue, new graphics have been included to help the readers in comprehending the environmental situation. Extracts from environment related legislations have also been included in this publication. |
