Summary, etc. | The Committee was requested to look into the issues related to the illegal trade in wildlife and suggest ways and means to improve the existing control measures. It was advised to visit at least 3 or 4 states in the country and hold discussions with field functionaries of related departments and submit their report by June 30, 1994, later extended to August 15, 1994.<br/><br/>The first meeting of the Committee was convened on June 1, 1994 at New Delhi and the Committee was briefed by the Secretary, Inspector General of Forests, Additional Inspector General of Forests (Wildlife), senior officials of the Ministry and some important non-official experts. The Committee called on the Hon'ble Minister for Environment and Forests and received guidance and advice.<br/><br/>In addition to extended sittings in Delhi, the Committee visited Madras, Calcutta, Bangalore and Bombay and held discussions with Forest and Wildlife authorities, NGOs, experts and scientists. It also visited protected areas in Nagarhole, Bandipur, Mudumalai, Dudwa, Borivili and Kaziranga and held discussions with field officers from Director downwards to forest watcher. It also met the villagers residing in the parks and buffer zones. |
