Summary, etc. In the last decade Soviet interest in the diverse economic, political, and social factors that influence change in the developing areas has grown tre mendously. This interest is clearly re flected in the expanding output of studies on this complicated subject by Soviet writers and scholars. Further more, the increasing sophistication of approach, including greater use of non Communist materials and contacts with non-Communists, indicates that the importance now placed in the Soviet Union upon a thorough under standing of the developing areas.

THE THIRD WORLD IN SOVI ET PERSPECTIVE fills a gap in the current literature on Soviet affairs. It consists of translations of a representa tive selection of essays on numerous as pects of the developing areas written by some of the more prominent and promising Soviet scholars. The studies deal with Asia, Africa, and Latin America and range over such subjects as economic development, class rela tionships, political forces, and agrari an reform. A number of the essays are concerned with more general problems of organizing and broadening Soviet research, and in an introductory chap ter the editor discusses the background and present trends in this type of schol arship in the Soviet Union.

Thomas Perry Thornton joined the Department of State in 1963 after serv ing for a number of years on the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in the Navy Department. Published for the Center of International Studies.
