Summary, etc. | Poverty is an extremely complex phenomenon. It cannot be explained in terms of simple cause and effect relationship or even by a combination of these relationships. Conventionally poverty has been ascribed to inadequate natural resources, lack of skills, inadequate technology and capital for development of resources, lack of motivation, deprivation of fruits of labour, exploitation and such like. But experience shows that poverty may persist even after the apparent cause was removed. Careful study of such incongruous situations gradually revealed circular chains of cause and effect relationships. This leads to the conclusion that the poor are poor simply because they are poor. There is a vicious circle of poverty. This web is insidious..

The present volume deals with various aspects of poverty in India. There are three sections in the book-analysis, perspectives and programmes - which broadly indicate the author's approach in understanding the web of poverty in India. The author has suggested wide ranging remedial measures. In his typical style the author has also suggested a mathematical model to justify his perception of the problem. The subject may not appear to be new but the readers will certainly find a freshness in the treatment and analysis and a new dimension to the issues discussed. |
