Summary, etc. Education in the tribal areas has since long been a matter of great concern and its continuous neglect has had a negative impact on the development of tribal people. Lack of institutional and other infrastructural facilities, less availability of tribal teachers, absence of teachers from the schools, lack of school books have been the main causes of educational deprivation of the members of scheduled tribe community. These reasons apart, their own language, dialect and specific cultural heritage have made education among the tribal mass a more difficult task.<br/>Jigyansu Tribal Research Centre, a non-governmental All India Tribal Research and Development organisation engaged in the task of welfare and development of this disadvantaged and underprivileged section of the society, organised a workshop on "Tribal Education in India" in 1993, the participants in which were eminent educationists, social scientists, anthropologists, social researchers and NGOs. The articles presented by the authors and the rich and multi-disciplinary discussions during the deliberations in this workshop focused on the themes namely (1) Traditional Tribal Training Institutions and Modern Educational Institutions, (2) Physical and Pedagogic Infrastructure equity in education and participation in democratic institutions, social, economic and political affairs, (3) mode of instruction in tribal areas and (4) contents, syllabi and modules for tribal education. These and a few more aspects of tribal education are the highlights of discussions contained in this book, which, it is believed, will serve as a source of information in the field of tribal education in India.
