520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The idea of writing this book was born after a visit by the authors to the United Kingdom in September November 1990 to study the British venture capital industry. We are grateful to the Commonwealth Secre tarist who sponsored this study. This was followed by a visit to various venture capital institutions in the UK and the USA by one of the authors during June July 1992.

We feel that a book on venture capital, with special reference to India, will be useful not only for professionals in the financial sector, but also to people working in industry. Teachers and students in management and engineering institutions may also find such a book useful. We hope that it will be of interest to administrators and policy-makers as well. Keeping in view the diverse interests of these groups of readers, use of jargon has been avoided to the extent possible, and a fairly detailed glossary of financial terms has also been given.

During the course of this work, we have benefited by interacting with a large number of people in industry and finance, including our profes sional colleagues. It is difficult to thank all of them individually. However, we would like to specially thank Mr. D.N. Ghosh and Dr V.R. Panchamukhi for their constant encouragement and guidance. We are grateful to Mr P.C. Nayak, Director, Centre for Technology Develop ment, Bangalore for providing the initial inspiration and support for writing this book. Mr K.S. Nadkarni and Mr Venkatdas willingly shared their rich experiences in the venture capital industry with us whenever we needed help on specific issues. Our colleague Dr S.R. Nair, gave us valu able suggestions on various aspects of the venture capital industry. The book owes whatever good points it has, to these friends and colleagues. We take responsibility for all its shortcomings. We would like to thank our parents, who have supported us in everything we have done through out our lives. We specially remember with gratitude the encouragement given by Justice K. Srinivasan (father of the first author), a great judge, a good man and a kind father. Special thanks are due to Rashmi, Ritu and Seema, who ungrudgingly used their spare time to help us in this effort.
