| Summary, etc. | Bangladesh is moving in a sustained way toward rice self-sufficiency. Production of rice, the major food staple of the country, grew at a rate of 2.7 percent in the 1980s versus a population growth of 2 percent. For a country characterized by chronic food deficits for a very long time, this is a remarkable accomplishment. Even though the country will continue to import wheat through the 1990s, the gap between foodgrain requirements of the population and foodgrain production is narrowing. The process of growth has been increasingly stable, as shown by a declining coefficient of variation of deviations of rice production around trend from a value of 5.5 percent during the 1970s to 3.3 percent in the 1980s. |
