The author's understanding of the concepts of caste, class and status group is presented in Chapter One. Chapter Two examines continuities and changes in the caste system. The remaining chapters cover such areas as class and politics, economic development and class interest, and the role of women in society. All the chapters except one are based on research conducted in India. The chapter on the role of caste and class among Indian plantation workers is based on a study conducted in Sri Lanka. |
