Summary, etc. The present book deals with the change of strategy of planning for economic development in India from the one based on Soviet model to that of the process of liberalization and market-oriented economy. It is an in depth study of the extent of poverty, unemployment, inequality of wealth and assets; and of the recent policy measures of the Government aiming at reducing poverty, unemployment and ensuring equitable redistribution of wealth. The fact that investment in human capital is more productive than physical capital has led the Planners to implement various programmes of human resource development in a big way. These programmes have been discusses at length. The measures have also necessitated a change in the macro-dimensions in which the high rate of development is combined with greater public consumption leading to a fall in conspicuous private consumption. The Indian economy, in three and a half decades of economic planning, plagued with the problem of foreign exchange crisis and the big question of repayment of foreign loans with accumulated interest. Hence, the question of balance of payment has been comprehensively discussed in the book. The acute prevailing poverty and non-scrupulous industrial development plans resulting in environmental degradation and ecological imbalances induced the author to dis cuss these aspects in greater detail. The discus sion leads to the conclusion that, in the interest of promoting healthy economic development, prob lems of environment a and ecology must form an integral part of the process of industrialization itself. Besides, recent Securities Scam of the order of millions of rupees has been exhaustively dealt with and corrective measures have also been suggested so that such scams do not recur
in future.
Written by a renowned economist of international repute the present book will not only prove to be an asset to the social scientists but will also benefit a large number of students drawn from different disciplines.
