Summary, etc. The Institute of Economic and Market Research takes great pleasure in placing this study which is expected to serve as a Development Perspective of Tourism in India upto 1990, at the service of the Central and State Departments of Tourism, the Tourist Trade and Industry in India and all who are interested in the accelerated development of tourism,<br/><br/>The Study was initiated as a rather ambitious project. It was planned to cover not<br/><br/>only an Economic and Market Survey of Tourism in India but also contain a Directory<br/><br/>ci Tourism including biographic notes on those who have made or continue to make<br/><br/>significant contributions to Tourism in this country.<br/><br/>But, as the study progressed, constraints appeared which obliged this Institute to limit the scope of this study only to an economic and market survey of Tourism in India. Nevertheless, we hope it shall be possible at some future date, for this Institute to under take an enlarged edition also covering the remaining tasks in this area. Meanwhile, the present study may be viewed as a bench-mark survey which brings at one place consi derable information on an area of great future interest and importance. It also provides a perspective for the future line of development of Tourism in India.<br/><br/>The present study has tried to identify gaps in tourism planning in India and focus attention on areas of future research. It also directs attention to a relative neglect of tourism research and information at country and area level, in contrast to what is being done in other countries, which are aggressively competing for world tourism traffic. It has been emphasized that a good information base, suitably supported by market research studies which can reduce the area of uncertainty and increase that of certainty, is essential to develop competitive planning, since we have to attract and re-attract visitors from a highly competitive world market.
