Summary, etc. Dr. Tope's work enjoys a rare and privileged place amongst the books on Constitutional Law of India. The Indian Bar Review, in a review of the first edition compares it to Dicey's Law of the Constitution, and places it in that class. The Academy Law review finds in him "an expert on constitutional law.." The first edition was highly appreciated by lawyers and judges and there was a demand for an enlarged edition of the work. The author has therefore made this edition very elaborate and exhaustive. The learned author has made an incisive and analytical study of the many recent political and constitutional developments that have influenced the basic thinking on the Constitution of India.

These include the evolution of the new concepts of locus standi, public interest litigation, the meaning of the expressions 'life' and 'personal liberty', judicial reforms, ecological jurisprudence, reservations for S.C./S.T. in educa tional institutions and employment, Union-State relations, anti-defection law etc. etc. A new jurisprudence is being evolved by the Supreme Court in these and similar areas.

A distinguishing feature of this edition is the addition of an Introduction, wherein the author has discussed the development of constitutionalism in India.
