Summary, etc. | The Indian economy is passing through an important period of structural reforms. The new policy reforms introducted since June 1991, set in motion a series of structural changes in the sphere of trade, industry, banking institution, foreign investment and capital markets so as to correct imbalances in the external payments position, fiscal deficits and persistent loss in public sector undertakings. The real issue is not whether the reforms are indispensible or not, but it is regarding the extent, the pace and the sequence of designing adjustment packages not only to harmonise the domestic socio economic structure prevailing in the country but also to integrate the Indian economy with the rest of the world.

The present two volumes contain these diverse analytical issues aimed at a near exhaustive treatment of almost all the leading aspects of structural adjustment reforms initiated in India since June 1991. While Volume I is mainly confined to analyse the basic issues and the new policy initiatives, Volume II focusses attention on the recent trends and future challenges. This book puts together forty valuable papers under eleven sections contributed by a number of eminent scholars from different institutions and universities, viz., Dr. Manmohan Singh, I.G. Patel, Malcolm S. Adiseshiah, Dr. P.R. Brahmananda, Dr. Raja J. Chelliah, Dr. C. Rangarajan, Dr. A.M. Khusro, Dr. Ruddar Dutt, Dr. J.D. Sethi, Dr. Ela Bhatt, Dr. Kamal Nayan Kabra, Professor S.K. Bose, Mr. R. Narasimham, Dr. S. Uma Devi, Dr. Guru Prasad Murthy, Dr. R.K. Sinha, Dr. B. Satyanarayan and others.

The papers basically deal with several interrelated structural facets to the question relating to what is possible and what must be done in finding some practical answer to the problem and the issues severely gripping the Indian economy. The book will be of immense help in understanding the ongoing debate adjustment reforms. |
