Summary, etc. International Labour Organisation has been playing a key role in securing social and economic justice for the working people since 1919. In fact, it has come to symbolise humanistic quest for peace and under standing. To fulfil its avowed objective of improving labour conditions, ILO has principally relied on the standard-setting activities. The ILO standards comprising of 172 Conventions and 179 Recommendations are the results of collective endeavour of member States. Surely, these standards for their effective application require wider awareness and availability in a concise and simple form. The present book is an effort in that direction.<br/>The introductory chapter details formulation, adoption, implementation, supervision, flexibility, and revision of standards. Subsequent chapters contain subject-wise gist of Conventions and Recommendations. The gist includes scope, object, theme, enforcement and current status of each instrument. Possible subjects for future standards have also been indicated. At the end of each chapter, an abstract of the instruments with their current status has been tabulated. Reliance has been placed on ILO publications and materials furnished by International Labour Standards Department (ILO) making the publication authentic. Suggestions of the working party on International Labour Standards made in 1987 regarding revision of instruments and possible subjects for new standards, along with the action taken so far, are provided. The concluding chapter details an analysis of problems and prospects of standard-setting activity. For an update information of ILO standards, the book would be of much value.
