Summary, etc. | The reservations made in the Indian Constitution under Article 15(4) and 16(4) was reasonable for a specific period from the point of view of equality of opportunity to uplift the Backward communities-socially and economically to the level or near level of the other advanced communi ties. But, Repeated extension of the period of this provisions led to serious consequences arising out of dissatisfactions amongst forward castes. The recommendations of Backward Classes Commissions so far set up by the central government on reservation of seats in educational Institutions and of posts in services for Backward castes made centering castes as the basis. Retention of reservation provisions in the written Constitution of India would not oppose by the anti-reservationist group if economic backwardness be the main criteria of backwardness instead of its centering on caste. The violences appeared intermittently in different States on the issue Indicates that there has been lacking a general climate of acceptance of reservation policies. The policy has added to the accumulating protest which is grow ing potent with mounting unemploy ment.

It is necessary at this moment to re-examine the policy to have a posi tive correlation between traditional social and educational backwardness. and economic status regarding the castes other than the traditionally backward castes. The book AN X-RAY ON RESERVATION PROVISIONS critically analyses the policy and gives a thought on re-examination of the policy. The publication is update, exhaustive and self-contained. |
