Summary, etc. | The 1991 Census results have indicated a docline of 5 points in the sex ratio; hence, many concluding that India's male dominating society has been against the women and girls in providing adequate madical care, nutrition and education.
The data on literacy have indicated that, in population aged 7 years and above, more than 50 per cent have now become literate, perhaps a matter of some pride. Further, while the male-female disparity in literacy rate has reduced somewhat the gap is still quite large, the rates being 63.9 per cent for males and 39.4 per cent for females.

Besides the all India and statewise data on population count, its growth rate, sex ratio, density and literacy rates, which have been published in the all India Provisional Population Tables, the district level data for 452 districts of the country (except those of Jammu & Kashmir where the 1991 Census is yet to be held) have especially been provided by Shri A.R. Nanda, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India. Similarly, data on the population of all cities with 100,000 persons living therein have become available. |
