Summary, etc. | Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) is considered to be one of the 20th century's best known peacemakers and architects of social justice, but while he is considered a figure of world significance, debate continues about the precise nature of his contribution. The essays in this volume are compiled from the colloquium on Mahatma Gandhi and his significance for today, held at The Claremont Graduate School in 1984. They examine Gandhi's strategy for nonviolent liberation in India and South Africa together with the influence of his thought on today's movements for political freedom, religious toleration and ending poverty. The contributors are from both developing and advanced industrial nations and provide a retrospective look at the achievements of Gandhi's life, noting occasional failures and idiosyncracies, while interpreting the key actions and ideas that shaped his legacy. They discuss Gandhi's character and leadership style, his moral and religious convictions and his vision of a just and nonviolent society. Throughout, they aim to demonstate how his personal values and beliefs were integrated with his private conduct and public actions. |
