Summary, etc. The purpose of the present report is to review and organize some of the social science research literature dealing with public leadership and citizen participation in public affairs in the United States. The selection and organization of materials is guided by two broad considerations:<br/> First, a major effort is made to focus on areas of research for which comprehensive reviews are not already available and where the many research findings have seldom been collated.<br/>Second, an effort is made to organize the available data and ideas in a form that will be useful to people concerned with adult education programs for public responsibility and leadership.<br/>During the initial stages of the project, representatives of The Fund met with the authors of this review to discuss the nature of the informational needs of those facing this particular educational situation. Originally, a lengthy list of questions was formulated. Analysis general questions that summarized the more specific inquiries. These five general questions were: this list resulted in the formulation of fiye <br/>1. How many people are involved in the various types of public- leadership roles? <br/>2. What are the social characteristics, social and educational back- grounds, and career patterns of these persons? <br/>3. What are the general population's attitudes toward and images of public leaders?<br/> 4. What motives are involved in original participation, continuing participation, and nonparticipation in public leadership roles? <br/>5.
