Summary, etc. | This series arises out of the increasing need for the international debate and dissemination of on-going empirical and theoretical research associated with rural areas in advanced societies. Rural areas, their residents and agencies, are now facing rapid social, economic and political change. The balance between production, amenity, mobility and development is readjusting as economic activities and their dependent relations become relocated Similarly the values placed upon rural living and participation are subject to change. Local, national and international political forces have direct influence upon rural areas, not only for those concerned with agriculture but also with regard to rural development initiatives, overall economic and social policy and regional and fiscal arrangements. It is increasingly recognized that such changes demand a strong inter-disciplinary and critical perspective enabling a more holistic analysis to help our understanding. In particular this requires approaches that are more theoretically accommodating and capable of transcending traditional disciplinary boundaries as well as different spatial and institutional levels of analysis. This first volume in the series takes the broad theme of rural restructuring looking particularly at the nature of rural-related responses to global processes of change (see Introduction) Overall, the volumes are designed to attract a wide audience associated with international comparative research. They will provide reviews of current research taking as their focus, one major theme per velame. All the con tributors are actively involved in research and committed to the development of international comparative research and able to provide current position statements about theoretical and empirical research in their particular fields of concern. It is incended that contributions should also be prospective in character, by identifying new research agenda and the likely consequences of contemporary changes in policy and economy. |
