| Summary, etc. | For centuries, rural India has been a major contributor to the economy. It contributes over 35 percent to the national income and exports over 30 percent of its products. What is more, it sustains over a 63-crore population living in rural areas. That is why it is said that rural India is the real India.<br/>But rural people are the most neglected section of Indian society today. Even a conservative estimate the rural folk who are denied basic rights presents a chilling picture. Over 50 percent suffer from poverty, disease or malnutrition: over 70 percent are illiterate; and millions are unemployed.
