Summary, etc. | What is the aim of planning in our country? Who are the architects of planning and for whom do they plan? What attention do the poor, the disadvantaged, the oppressed

-whom we condescendingly call the 'Weaker Sections' -receive in our Five Year Plans. Where is the planning process taking all of us? These are some of the questions dealt with in this book.

The papers in this volume were originally presented at a Seminar organised at the Indian Social Institute, New Delhi, from January 29 to 31, 1985. The contributors include a galaxy of eminent scholars like Raj Krishna, Imtiaz Ahmed, P.S. Krishnan, B.K. Roy Burman, M.S.A. Rao, N.R. Madhava Menon and Rajni Kothari.

A critical Introduction, Conclusion and Recommendations. of the participants and an extensive bibliography add to the richness of the book. At a time when the Seventh Five Year Plan is being finalised, the present volume would facilitate and encourage further dialogue and critical participation by all in the planning process in the country.

Dr Jose Kananaikil is the Director of the Programme for Scheduled Castes, Indian Social Institute, New Delhi. |
