| Summary, etc. | This is probably the first comprehensive study of the institution of slavery in ancient India. One of the most neglected branches of Indology, Dr Chanana's work is refreshingly new, both in scope and treatment. The period covered is chiefly from the sixth century B.C. to the beginning of the Christian era.<br/><br/>Dr Chanana makes a welcome departure from the heavy and almost exclusive reliance that Indologists have hitherto put in Sanskrit texts in their studies of slavery in ancient India. Giving first preference to facts found in Pali texts as also evidences of archaeology and anthropology, Dr Chanana has brought to light much that is of genuine value and interest.<br/><br/>The distinguishing merit of the book, however, lies in the thorough and sys tematic presentation of all the relevant references to slavery in India. This is far more than a mere study of slavery in ancient India: it is an excellent beginning in the writing of a socio-economic history of India. |
