Summary, etc. This book comprises twenty-four essays by leading economists who have studied India's performance over the past forty years. There is an opening section on the background, where Amartya Sen, Sukhamoy Chakravarty and Raj Krishna provide overview essays.

This is followed by a section on economic performance, in which A. M. Khusro, Dalip Swamy and Kaushik Basu analyse post-1947 developments, new economic coalitions, and governmental policy.

Another section concentrates on issues of economic growth, in which Ranjit Sau, Prem Shankar Jha, V. S. Minocha, K. N. Kabra, Aurobindo Ghose and Sanjaya Baru look at resource mobilization and growth strategies.

There are two sections on sectoral performance, one of which examines agriculture, the other industry. Development and performance in both these sectors is considered by G. S. Bhalla, B. M. Bhatia and H. Laxminarayan (on agriculture); and by R. K. Roy, N. S. Siddharthan and Balraj Mehta (on industry).

Finally, a section on the concentration of wealth, poverty and deprivation considers class structure, rural underdevelopment, poverty eradication programmes, new economic policies and the industrial policy. The contributors within this section are B. B. Bhattacharya, K. Subbarao, S. D. Tendulkar, Kamal Chenoy, Balraj Mehta and Arun Bose.

This volume, by looking at the interface of politics and economics, as well as in its comprehensive coverage of the rural and the urban, agriculture and industry, development policy and government strategy, will be extremely useful to anyone who wants a broad perspective on the Indian economy in modern times.
