Summary, etc. | The second volume of a three part study on Indian economic thought, the book covers the first half of the twentieth century while a long epilogue brings it practically up to the middle of 1977. It is an exhaustive discussion of the fiscal policy debates, the currency controversies, the economics of depression, the issues in foreign trade and balance of payments, the economics of war, and ideas on planning and development. There are two separate chapters Gandhian economics and on the Indian exercises in pure economic theory. All ideas and debates have been evaluated in the context of the historical developments, and the impact of ideas developed in the West has been indicated.

The study analyses historically the whole matrix of interrelated ideas that emerged during the period covered, with emphasis on the positive contributions of Indian economists. The book would serve as supplementary reading for undergraduate students and required reading for all postgraduate students in Indian universities. It would also be useful to students appearing for the all-India examinations of the Union Public Service Commission. |
