Summary, etc. | Practically every country in the world has its North and South, in terms of the uneven distribution of growth and development, and unequal access to jobs and incomes. It is clearly a major challenge to policy-makers that, in countries at all levels of development, populations of whole regions have been left behind, or have suffered from the economic decline of their local communities. This stimulating book, with an introduction by Jean Mayer, brings together a numberof articles on the subject that have appeared in the International Labour Review in recent years. Contrasting approaches to the development of regional and local employment are presented, including both rural and urban strategies and country studies. The authors take the view that, instead of people being induced to migrate in search of jobs, it is far preferable that jobs should be brought to them. Their proposals for vigorous action to correct the growing imbalances in social and economic development will provoke debate and reflection on a highly topical issue. <br/> |
