Summary, etc. Since Independence, there has been much emphasis on Tribal Development Programmes. To improve the quality of life of tribal populations and to integrate them with the main-stream of Indian population various develop mental programmes were launched through different Government agencies and Departments. But the progress made in this regard falls below the expectations. In this context, studies from different parts of the country on the content and execution of tribal development programmes are extremely relevant to understand the development process and its consequences.<br/><br/>In this book, Dr. P.V. Rao presents his comprehensive study of the function ing of Institutional Framework in the implementation of Tribal Development Programmes. Based on fieldwork con ducted in Visakhapatnam District of Andhra Pradesh, this study is one of the few works on Tribal Areas published from this State. an extensive review The study includes on the History of Tribal Development Programmes in India reflecting upon the Government policies, shifts in the Planning Strategies and changes in the Institutional Frame work. In the backdrop of this review, the field investigations were carried out at two levels, viz., (i) multi-tribal gram panchayat, (ii) Tribal Development Block and Integrated Tribal Development Project. The study throws light on various limitations and weak points involved in the effective implementation of programmes of different institutions. The study also deals with the response by various sections of tribal population, focussing on the role of tribal elite in cornering developmental and the manner in benefits which they are emerging as 'Internal Exploiters'. The study concludes with discussion on a the relevance of 'Growth Centre App roach to tribal areas.<br/><br/>A valuable book for all those interested in Tribal Areas and Development Stu dies, especially for Anthropologists and other Scientists.
