Summary, etc. The Constitution makers were conscious of the social, economic and political inequalities which existed in the Indian society at the time of independence. For meeting new challenges, they evolved huge institutional set up. These institutions have by now suf ficiently grown in size and number. Many Indian and foreign authors in these forty years have written volumes on these insti tutions. But the operation of democratic institutions hinges upon the socio-economic setting and problems of the society. This is more true in the context of socio-economic relations, traditional beliefs, religious com mitments and caste feelings in India. It, hence, becomes necessary to understand the dimensions of the social order of which the political institutions are born.

If one has to understand the nature of the political system in India, one must inves tigate the socio-economic linkages and the direction of the political processes, which influence the political behaviour and determine political directions. In the absence of such an explanation, political and more particularly the recent trends in the Indian political system, appear on the one hand as a great mystification and on the other as a series of sensationalised polit ical events. It is here that the author has ana lysed the origin, growth, functioning and the nature of political institutions in India in terms of socio-economic dimensions.

Starting with the establishment and nature of British rule in India, socio economic exploitation by the colonial rulers, the struggle for national indepen dence, the formation and character of Con stituent Assembly, its perceptions about future India, the institutional set up, their mutual relationship, the book analyses the caste combinations, the philosophy of res ervation policy, the religious groupings, their utilization by the political leadership, the social base of political institutions and their inter-dependence. Besides this the scourge of poverty, the development strat egy, its implementation and implications, the legal system and the questions relating to the status of women have received care ful and systematic handling at the hands of the author.
