Summary, etc. In writing this book, the aim of the author has been to present an analytical study of the ideology and programme of the Indian National Congress with special reference to its similarities and differences with Gandhism. The work was intended to serve, on the one hand, as a comprehensive digest of the ideological foundations of the Indian national movement during the Gandhian era and, on the other hand, as a companion volume to Sriyut Pattabhi Sitaramayya's historical work The History of the Indian National Congress.
The second edition of the book has been enlarged by the addition of two chapters on the post Independence Ideology and Programme of the Congress, which was shaped by Pandit Nehru and Indira Gandhi. It centered around one word-Socialism. The Congress further deviated from Gandhism, but its later ideology is more or less a logical development of its earlier ideology.
Voluminous literature has been published on Gandhi and the Congress. Yet few attempts have been made to . analyse objectively and comprehensively , ;'the nature and content of the Congress .' Ideology and Programme and the influences which shaped them.
Almost all the writers on this topic, including Dr. Sitaramayya, have approached the subject from a chronological or historical angle. Almost none tried to tackle the subject from an ideological' angle or adopted the subject approach.
The present study is intended to fill this gap,
