Summary, etc. Government planning at various levels has been a central fact of economic life in India since indepen dence. In this volume a group of social scientists working in the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, assesses the major facets of Indian planning experience in a set of interconnected essays. The papers cover issues ranging from land reforms, policies towards large, small and cottage industries, regional disparities and their alleviation, agricultural price policies and the public distribution system to general questions of macroeconomic balances and the nature of the Indian polity as revealed in income generation and distribution processes. Appropriately enough, the studies are offered in honour of Professor Bhabatosh Datta, one of India's leading economists and one of the most revered teachers of his generation. The essays are aimed at professionals in the social sciences, but are written in a style which makes them accessible to students at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
