Summary, etc. Explorations In The Family And Other Essays is a commemoration volume in memory of Professor Kanaiyalal Motilal Kapadia who was the Head of the Department of Sociology, University of Bom bay from 1959 till his premature death in 1967. As Professor Kapadia himself was family sociologist, it is natural a noted that a book in his memory should mainly devote itself to the subject of the family. Many international ly famous family sociologists, both Indian and foreign, have contributed to the volume. Child marriage, mate selection, hus band-wife interaction, familial attitudes, blue-collar marriage, youth culture etc. are explored by leading authorities on the sub ject. Indian family life, including some tribal groups, receives maximum attention. Family life in West Pakistan, Nepal, Japan, Korea and the United States are also covered. There are theoreti cal essays on the family and its links with the larger society.

Included in the volume are a few essays of general interest. Education and the equality of opportunity, voluntary associa tions, secularization and Hindu ism, revolt of the American Negroes, linguistic divisions, landlords, modernization etc. are some of the themes examined. All in all, it is both a valuable book and a unique Festschrift to a scholar who is no more.
