Summary, etc. The authors have undertaken a sub stantially objective analysis of the re servation policy in personnel selection which is of grave concern to policy makers and administrators. Beginning with the implication of Varns Vyavastha in ancient India they have briefly traced the history of discrimination against the hierarchically lower castes in the Hindu Society and the efforts made by various social reformers to get rid of this evil. Various efforts made by the constitution fremers, central and state governments to provide reservation for SC and ST, roster system, carry forward rule, special development measures to facilitate entry of these classes in the services and their impact as also the anti-reservation stirs have been discus sed in detail. Detailed treatment has been given to selection procedures, their validity and reservation, to efficiency and impact of the policy in this area on the quality of manpower. Some research studies conducted by selection agencies have also been quoted. A separate chapter has been devoted to the theore tical discussion of equality of opport unity, efficiency and positive discrimi nation. An appraisal of this policy has also been made by bringing out the assumptions underlying this policy, the present context and objectives and their realisation and problems associated to it. Finally the need for rethinking on this policy has been highlighted and some suggestions offered for the con sideration of all concerned.
