Summary, etc. India and the United States have much in common. Both are dedicated to liberty, democracy, national independence and respect for the individual. Each country strives for the maintenance of world peace and the creation of the kind of world in which every people can pursue these ends 72 in its own way.

Yet India and the United States differ signi ficantly in many ways and there are important divergencies in the policies of India and the United States even when the two nations seek similar ends.

Some of the differences between these two friendly nations are due to ignorance and misunderstanding. Some result from differ ing appraisals of the problems they face together. And some reflect real - if limited conflicts of interest.

Study, discussion and the exchange of views cannot resolve all of these differences, but they can help immeasurably. This book is the product of a two-year research programme held jointly by the Council on Foreign Relations of New York and the Indian Council of World Affairs of New Delhi, in which thirty-four Indian and American specialists thoroughly debated the relations of the two countries. Their findings have been set down by two distin guished authors-one Indian, the other American who were both active mem bers of the study groups.
